History
Wikipedia reports that the likely origins of this tune are from former slaves in South Carolina who spoke a form of pidgin called "Gullah". The title would then translate to "Come By Here". The song was collected sometime between 1922 and 1931 by the "Society for the Preservation of Spirituals". Apparently these recently discovered facts dispute the long-standing claim to copyright in 1936 of Reverend Marvin V. Frey (1918-1992) under the title "Come By Here".
